General Surgery

The Department of General Surgery deals with a wide range of diseases and emergencies that may require surgical treatment. A General Surgeon is specialized in pre and post-operative management and in handling all kinds of surgical emergencies, especially Trauma. General Surgery primarily deals with abdominal components like stomach, colon, gall bladder, oesophagus, liver, bile ducts, and pancreas. Most of these abdominal surgeries are performed through a keyhole surgery method called Laparoscopy. A General Surgeon always has a better stand in situations where the patient has more than one body-system involvement and there is an overlap between specialties.

Medical Conditions and Treatment:

  • Hernia – It is treated with a minimally invasive method that allows a laparoscopic surgeon to heal the damaged area through small incisions. Post-operative pain in such cases is minimal and one can swiftly return to normal activities.

  • Appendicitis – This is also treated with a laparoscopic procedure called Laparoscopic Appendectomy and has almost no post-operative complication.

  • Anorectal Conditions like Anal Fistula, Fissures, Piles and Prolapse – Different treatment modes are opted by the General Surgeon to cure these ailments, some might require a minimal invasive surgery.

  • Gall Bladder Stones and Inflammation – Operation to remove the gallbladder is the only way to treat gallstones. Conventional surgery method or Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy is chosen according to the difficulty encountered during the assessment.

  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease – In most cases, the doctor suggests certain lifestyle and dietary changes and prescribes medicines. In extreme cases where the condition can’t be cured by medicines, surgery might be required.

  • Hemorrhoids – They can be treated by lifestyle and dietary changes, medicines and some holistic healing procedures.
